Trở lại sau thành công của triển lãm ra mắt “Vụn Thời Đại”, giữa tháng 4 này, Trung tâm nghệ thuật The Outpost sẽ đem tới cho công chúng một triển lãm mới mang tên “Dị Diện” / “Peculiar Interfaces”. “Dị Diện”, hay giao diện dị biệt, khảo sát bản chất của công nghệ và cách chúng đang hiện diện, can dự và thay đổi giao diện xã hội.
Được thực hiện bởi Giám đốc nghệ thuật The Outpost Lê Thuận Uyên trong vai trò giám tuyển, với sự tham gia của 08 gương mặt và nhóm nghệ sĩ hàng đầu trong nước và quốc tế: Ryoji Ikeda (Nhật Bản), Kaz Watabe (Nhật Bản), Mario Klingemann (Đức), SMACK (Hà Lan), Ip Yuk-Yiu (Hong Kong), Shinseungback & Kimyonghun (Hàn Quốc), Areumnari Ee (Hàn Quốc) và Nguyễn Hoàng Giang (Việt Nam), “Dị Diện” hứa hẹn sẽ trở thành triển lãm quan trọng nhất cho đến nay về nghệ thuật phương tiện mới ở Việt Nam.
“Ý tưởng cho Dị Diện bật ra khi tôi lật lại Doraemon(*), bộ truyện tranh yêu thích của tôi thuở nhỏ. Trong một khoảnh khắc, tôi nhận ra có rất nhiều bảo bối tiện ích trong chiếc túi bốn chiều của chú mèo máy đến từ tương lại ấy đã trở thành những vật dụng không thể thiếu trong đời sống chúng ta. Cuộc gọi video miễn phí, những thiết bị chuyển ngữ, bản đồ cho phép bạn thấy quang cảnh đường xung quanh, robot với trí tuệ nhân tạo, v.v... tất cả đều hoá thành một phần hiện thực của chúng ta từ lúc nào”, trích lời giám tuyển Lê Thuận Uyên.
Trong thời gian 30 năm ngắn ngủi, sự cải tiến của công nghệ và công cuộc chuyển đổi số đã không ít lần khiến chúng ta kinh ngạc và đồng thời cũng gợi ra nhiều mối lo âu. Nếu những bảo bối trong truyện có thể đem lại rắc rối cho Doraemon và những người bạn thì công nghệ và không gian số đã tác động như thế nào tới đời sống văn hoá của xã hội thế kỷ 21?
Qua tác phẩm của 08 nghệ sĩ và nhóm nghệ sĩ, Dị Diện mở ra những đối thoại về: một hiện thực hỗn lai (theo đó, thế giới thực và ảo ngày càng bện quyện); ý nghĩa của dữ liệu trong thời đại của thuật toán (suy tư lại về văn bản, hình ảnh và âm thanh trong thời đại ý nghĩa được tạo ra bởi dữ liệu hóa và học máy); chủ nghĩa hậu nhân bản (nhìn nhận ý nghĩa con người trong thời đại của máy móc thông minh) cũng như sự kết nối và cảm thông (giải nén các ý tưởng về ký ức số, tính kết nối và đối thoại). Và cuối cùng, nếu như lập trình và thuật toán cũng được coi như những biểu tượng đầy chất thơ thì liệu chúng ta có thể hiểu về thẩm mỹ của chúng như thế nào?
Khác với các triển lãm số thường tìm cách trình bày những điểm gặp gỡ giữa nghệ thuật và công nghệ, Dị Diện hướng đến việc diễn giải sự hiện diện rộng rãi của công nghệ mới đang tác động đến mối quan hệ giữa người và người với thế giới xung quanh.
(*) Lấy bối cảnh Nhật Bản những năm 1970, bộ truyện tranh “Doraemon” kể lại những chuyến phiêu lưu của cậu học sinh tiểu học Nobita và bạn thân của cậu - chú mèo máy Doraemon với chiếc túi bốn chiều chứa những món “bảo bối” đa năng thần kỳ đến từ tương lai.

After the success of “Fractured Times”, The Outpost’s inaugural exhibition in late November 2022, this April we are pleased to announce the space’s latest exhibition titled “Peculiar Interfaces” / “Dị Diện”. The exhibition surveys how technologies and the digital have impacted our 21st century society.
Curated by The Outpost’s Artistic Director Lê Thuận Uyên and featuring the works of 08 international and local renowned artists/groups: Ryoji Ikeda (Japan), Mario Klingemann (Germany), SMACK (The Netherlands), Ip Yuk-Yiu (Hong Kong), Shinseungback & Kimyonghun (South Korea), Areumnari Ee (South Korea), Kaz Watabe (Japan) and Nguyễn Hoàng Giang (Vietnam), “Peculiar Interfaces” has the potential to become the most important art exhibition to date in Vietnam on new technologies.

In realising the growth of digital media in everyday context and the lack of its discussion in the local art conversations, The Outpost seeks to introduce artworks that engage with the amplifying presence of smart machines and digital technology through our exhibition and acquisition activities. “Peculiar Interfaces” serves as an abstract to The Outpost’s long-term dedication to explore and unpack how technology is impacting our relationships to one another, and to the world around us.
“The idea for ‘Peculiar Interfaces’ struck me while I was revisiting my favourite childhood manga – Doraemon (*). Suddenly, it dawned on me that many futuristic gadgets in the four-dimensional pouch of this beloved time-traveling cyborg have now become indispensable items in our life. From free video calls to translation devices, from street maps to artificial intelligence, digital applications are becoming parts of our reality”, said curator Lê Thuận Uyên.
In a relatively short breath of time (30 years), technological marvel has had us in awe yet also created considerable anxiety. If those tools brought not only benefits but also complications for Doraemon and his friends, what would be the cultural impact of advanced technologies and the digital space on our 21st-century society?
Through the works of 08 artists and artist collectives, “Peculiar Interfaces” opens up conversations on: a hybrid reality (whereby the physical and virtual worlds increasingly intertwine); the meaning of data in the age of algorithms (rethinking text, imageries and sound in the age of meaning-making through datafication and machine learning); posthumanism (negotiating what it means to be human in the age of smart machines) as well as connection and care (unpacking the ideas of digital memory, connectivity and dialogues). And last but not least, if codes and algorithms are treated as poetic symbols, how may we understand their aesthetics?
This exhibition does not seek to present the convergence points of art and technology. Rather, it aims to examine how the amplifying presence of new technologies is impacting our relationships with one another and the world around us.
(*) Set in Japan in the 1970s, “Doraemon” tells the adventures of elementary school boy Nobita and his best friend, the time-traveling, cat-robot, Doraemon. Sent to the past from the 22nd century, Doraemon has a four-dimensional pouch in which he stores tools, inventions, and gadgets from the future to aid Nobita whenever he is faced with a problem.
